Agentic Commerce: Designing Online Stores for AI Shopping Agents
For twenty years, online stores were designed for people clicking through pages. In 2026, a growing share of shopping journeys starts with an AI assistant — and some end there too.

What agentic commerce means
Agentic commerce describes AI agents that search for products, compare options and, with the shopper’s permission, complete parts of the purchase. Instead of typing keywords, a customer describes a goal and the agent does the browsing.
The protocol race
Two open standards dominate the conversation. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe, was released in September 2025. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) was announced at NRF in January 2026 with partners including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Both give agents a standard way to read catalogues and hand off checkout.
A reality check
Adoption is still early. OpenAI pulled back its in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026 after early data-quality issues, and everyday consumer use of shopping agents remains limited. The sensible move is to prepare now without betting everything on a single protocol.
How to prepare your store
Clean, complete product data is the new storefront: accurate titles, attributes, variants, stock, prices and shipping details in a structured form. Implement Product and Offer schema, keep merchant feeds in sync, and make policies — returns, delivery times, warranties — explicit and machine-readable.
People still buy brands
Agents compare specifications; people choose brands they trust. A distinctive identity, honest reviews and a fast, accessible checkout still decide who wins when the shopper — or their agent — lands on your site.
Key takeaways
Agentic commerce turns AI assistants into a new sales channel.
ACP (OpenAI + Stripe) and UCP (Google + partners) lead the standards race.
Structured, accurate product data matters more than ever.
Brand, trust and checkout UX still close the sale.
